If your having trouble winning battles when your starting out, its best to team up with a light character, preferably the Light Consular. Your starting armor is weak, so use the Deep Freeze skill to delay the enemy attacks. If your teaming up with a dark character, use the Cloud Mind Skill. You will need to match light or dark crystals to recharge your mana.
Also remember each affinity color has strengths and weaknesses over another color.
